Rashes

Rashes are patches of skin that are abnormal in color or texture and can look bumpy, scaly, or swollen. Caused by medical, psychological and environmental factors, they can bring about itchiness or pain.

What is it?

Alterations in skin color, texture, or feel that result in irritation or swelling are commonly known as rashes. They can emerge due to a variety of psychological reasons such as depression, anxiety, fear, or a traumatic event, and/or environmental factors like air pollution, food carcinogens, pesticides, lead, and excessive exposure to computer screens. Various medical conditions can also bring about rashes, such as chickenpox, contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, ringworm, and shingles. Lately, some patients have reported rashes in connection with coronavirus infection.

Although rashes can be frustrating or frightening, remember, you're not on your own! Rashes are a common occurrence that almost all individuals experience at some point in their lives. And, of course, the board-certified team at our Bexley Dermatology is here to assist.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association suggests reaching out to a board-certified dermatologist, like those at our Bexley, OH office if you experience:

A rash covering a majority of your body.

A rash that develops blisters, open sores, or raw skin.

A rash accompanied by fever or illness.

A rapidly spreading rash.

A rash that causes pain.

A rash affecting the eyes, lips, mouth, or genital skin.

How is it treated?

The course of action for dealing with a rash largely depends on its origin or type. Our dermatologists can provide treatment through the use of medicated creams, topical anti-itch lotions such as hydrocortisone, moisturizers, topical anti-fungal creams, oral medications, oral antihistamines and light therapy. While some rashes may cause more discomfort than actual harm, others could be an indicator of a more serious underlying health condition. Should your rash require professional care, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with our highly skilled dermatologists on Main Street in Bexley, OH.
