Actinic Keratosis

A rough, scaly patch, bump or reddish spot on areas of the skin often exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, neck, hands and forearms.

What is it?

Actinic Keratosis is a prevalent skin ailment that we frequently address at Bexley Dermatology. Also referred to as solar keratosis, this condition arises from prolonged exposure to the sun, tanning beds, or sunlamps. Actinic keratosis manifests as precancerous skin growths marked by red, pink, or brown spots on the skin's surface. These blemishes typically appear on sun-exposed areas such as the face, lips, ears, neck, hands, arms, and shoulders. This skin condition is widespread and usually affects adults due to extended exposure to ultraviolet light. You can reduce your risk of developing actinic keratosis by limiting your sun exposure and shielding your skin from UV rays. Though sunbathing may seem enjoyable, it can be detrimental for your skin. Sun damage can accumulate throughout the year - even during winter's chill. It is recommended to use SPF 30+ sunscreen and minimize your time under the sun's harmful rays. Our board-certified dermatologists in Bexley, Ohio are equipped to manage this condition, ensuring optimal skin health for our patients.

How is it treated?

Should actinic keratoses be left without treatment, there's a chance they could evolve into a type of skin cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma. At Bexley Dermatology, our highly skilled, physician-led team will thoroughly assess any unusual spots on your skin, ensuring you receive safe and swift treatment if necessary. We often treat these growths using a chilling procedure, topically applied medicated creams or gels, or cryotherapy. If you observe a new or evolving spot on your skin, don't hesitate to book an appointment at our clinic in Bexley, Ohio today.
