Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Eczema is a red rash or red patches of the skin that is commonly found inside the folds of elbows, knees, hands, feet and cheeks. It develops due to a defective skin barrier and can be very uncomfortable.

What is it?

Eczema is a skin condition that affects both adults and children, often inherited and linked to allergies. It leads to dry, scaly skin and blisters or small bumps. In extreme cases, eczema may result in painful cracks in your skin that can bleed. Though many individuals associate the term eczema with atopic dermatitis, eczema actually encompasses a wider range of skin conditions. Atopic dermatitis, the most prevalent form of eczema, can affect almost any part of the skin.

It's common in infants and young children, causing rashes on their cheeks and chin. However, it can also impact individuals of any age and any part of the body. Those suffering from eczema experience flare-ups that involve inflamed, itchy, uncomfortable, and painful rashes, as well as periods of remission that can stretch for weeks, months, or even years. Eczema isn't contagious but it's certainly not enjoyable. Our team of board-certified dermatologists at Bexley Dermatology are here to assist you.

If you are experiencing a persistent or unwanted rash, book an appointment, our team of skin care experts have years of experience.

How is it treated?

While a definitive cure for eczema may not exist, applications like petroleum jelly and skin moisturizers often provide relief for its symptoms. It is not uncommon for individuals to experience persistent symptoms without further medical intervention. Our expert team at Bexley Dermatology is equipped to accurately determine which of the 7 types of eczema you might be dealing with, and devise a personalized regimen, such as:

  • Tailored skincare routine
  • Wet wrap therapy
  • Management of triggers to lessen flare-ups
  • Medication prescribed for topical application
  • Phototherapy
  • Systemic (across the body) medication

Our board-certified dermatologists in Bexley, Ohio have been involved in the recent development of innovative treatments aimed at reducing, and sometimes even eradicating, symptoms. Individuals who have not found relief from previous therapies may discover that these newer medications offer relief. Begin your path to clearer skin today by scheduling a consultation at our medical practice.
