Facial fillers are an effective way to improve your outward appearance and help you feel great about the way you look. However, face fillersunderstanding if this procedure is right for you often takes some help from your dermatologist. Find out more about facial fillers and what they can do for you with Dr. Jill Fichtel and Dr. Matthew Zirwas at Bexley Dermatology in Bexley, OH.

What is a dermal filler?
Unlike other cosmetic dermatology procedures like Botox, dermal fillers add volume to the facial skin to smooth unwanted wrinkles and creases, plump lips, and restore fullness to the cheeks. In addition to addressing wrinkles and plumping cheeks, dermal fillers can also simply fill out the face, adding volume to the hollows of the eyes or temple areas or even correct acne scars. This versatile procedure is often recommended for those patients who have fat pads which have shifted underneath their skin.

How do dermal fillers work?
Some dermal fillers use natural substances found in the body to fill out the skin’s volume and provide a smaller risk for reactions than their synthetic counterparts. Synthetic fillers last longer than natural fillers and provide more semi-permanent results. Most dermal filler procedures last about a year before the filler begins breaking down, requiring a touch-up injection. During the procedure, your doctor injects the filler directly into the skin underneath the unwanted crease, wrinkle, or fold. The filler plumps the area, smoothing the skin to make the imperfection less noticeable.

Lose that double chin! Kybella is a prescription medicine that reduces fat under the chin. Dr. Jill Fichtel and Dr. Matthew Zirwas at Bexley kybellaDermatology in Bexley, OH, offer Kybella treatments to their patients. Here's everything you've ever wanted to know about Kybella.

How does Kybella work?

When Kybella is injected beneath the chin, it destroys fat. Fat cleared from the treated area is processed through your metabolism. Once the fat cells leave your body, you’re left with a reduction in fullness under your chin. The active ingredient in Kybella is deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a chemical that promotes the breakdown of fat.

How is Kybella given?

Kybella is typically a 20-minute in-office treatment session. Your Bexley dermatologist will give you multiple injections under your chin at each treatment session. You and your dermatologist will customize your treatment based on the amount of fat under your chin and your treatment goals.

How long will results last?

Most patients are very satisfied with the results of the treatment. The results gained with Kybella are considered long-term. Some researchers believe that the results might be permanent. Once your fat cells are destroyed, those cells cannot accumulate or store fat. After achieving the look you want, further treatment is not necessary.

Will there be side effects?

The most commonly reported side effects of Kybella include swelling, pain, itching, bruising, numbness, redness, skin tightness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area. Although a rare occurrence, a small percentage of patients may have an allergic reaction to its active ingredient. Call your healthcare provider for medical advice about side effects.

Is the procedure safe?

Kybella is a FDA-approved injectable treatment to reduce fat under the chin. After eight years of clinical studies with over 1,600 patients with moderate to severe double chin fat, it was found to be both effective and safe for double chin elimination. For the best results, choosing a doctor who is fully experienced in administering Kybella injections can make all the difference.

Life goes by in an instant. Call Bexley Dermatology at 614-947-1716 now to schedule an appointment for a Kybella treatment in Bexley, OH. Kybella has helped many people improve their appearance, boosting their confidence and improving their lives. And it can do the same for you.

Did you know that your skin type could change the way you care for your skin?Skin care

Most people just assume that as long as they wash their skin everyday that’s all they really have to do to keep it looking its best. But what if our Bexley, OH, dermatologists, Dr. Matthew Zirwas and Dr. Jill Fichtel, told you that your specific skin type could actually play a role in how you care for your skin and its overall health? Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine your skin type.

How does your skin feel on a regular basis?

This is one important question to ask yourself pretty regularly because how your skin feels could really tell you a lot about what your skin needs. If you find that some areas of your face are dry but certain regions like your forehead and nose are oily, then you could have combination skin.

If your skin is flaky and prone to stinging or itching then you could be dealing with sensitive skin. Skin that feels tight or even peels or cracks is considered dry. Those who battle shiny, greasy skin have an oily skin type.

What does your skin feel like after you wash it?

If you are someone with dry skin you may find that washing your face often leaves your skin feeling tight and uncomfortable. Combination skin, on the other hand, will typically feel great in oilier regions (also known as the T-zone) but feel tight in drier areas.

Sensitive skin may feel tingly, itchy or become red after washing. Conversely, oily skin often feels better after it’s been washed (of course, oil will often reappear rather quickly afterwards).

Do you need to use a moisturizer often?

How often you turn to a moisturizer is another good indicator of your skin type. If you have dry or sensitive skin you may need to moisturize your skin more often than someone who has oily or normal skin. Those with combination skin may find that oily regions do not need moisturizing as often as drier areas. If you aren’t sure what kind of moisturizer you should be using or how often you should be using it, then it’s time to turn to our Bexley skin doctor for help.

Can you see your pores?

If you really don’t notice pores around your cheeks but pores seem rather clogged or enlarged near your nose, this is a good indicator that you have combination skin. Those with oily skin also deal with enlarged, noticeable pores, while those with dry, sensitive or normal skin often don’t notice their pores.

Have you discovered your skin type? If so, then you may have questions for us. You can call Bexley Dermatology today to schedule your skin care consultation in Bexley, OH, and finally get the proper care your skin needs to glow from the inside out.

Do you have a stubborn layer of fat that refuses to budge, despite months of exercising and dieting? CoolSculpting, a non-invasive coolsculptingtreatment, targets love handles and other fat deposits. Bexley, OH, dermatologist Dr. Jill Fichtel of Bexley Dermatology discuss how CoolSculpting works.

CoolSculpting targets fat cells

Coolsculpting uses innovative technology that gets rid of fat cells by freezing them. The crystallized fat cells are then metabolized and eliminated by your body. Coolsculpting only targets fat cells and doesn't use temperatures low enough to damage healthy cells. Once the fat cells are gone, you'll enjoy a more sculpted appearance.

Coolsculpting treatments offer impressive results

Fat deposits decrease by about 20 percent every time you have a CoolSculpting treatment. Because it takes a little while for your body to eliminate the fat cells, you may seem some difference about three or four weeks after treatment.

CoolSculpting is a good choice if you're concerned about love handles, back fat, abdominal fat deposits, fat in your flank, muffin top or rolls under your buttocks. Do you hate your double chin? CoolSculpting can get rid of the fat and make your neck look more svelte. The treatment offers a simple way to improve the appearance of your legs, too, and can be used to remove fat from your outer and inner thighs.

What does CoolSculpting feel like?

You'll definitely feel the cold during a CoolSculpting treatment, but most patients don't find the treatment uncomfortable. In fact, many find that treatments offer the perfect time to do a little reading or even answer a few work emails. When you visit our Bexley office for a treatment, a thin layer of gel will be applied to your skin before treatment begins. Because the CoolSculpting applicator uses vacuum suction to hold the treated area in place, you may notice a little tugging or pinching. After the initial burst of cold, your skin will gradually become numb. Treatments last between one to three hours, depending on the number of areas treated.

CoolSculpting can help you finally get rid of unattractive fat. Call Bexley, OH, dermatologists Drs. Matthew Zirwas and Jill Fichtel of Bexley Dermatology at (614) 947-1716 to schedule an appointment.

Don’t let acne ruin your skin. Discover the many options you have for managing your symptoms.acne

While we often associate acne with our teenage years, it doesn’t mean that as adults we are immune to acne. In fact, many adults find that they still experience breakouts rather regularly. Tackling your acne shouldn’t be a frustrating undertaking, which is why it’s a good idea to turn to Bexley Dermatology, your Bexley, OH dermatologist you can trust to help.

There are different approaches you can take to tackle your acne symptoms. Acne forms under the skin, so just removing the oils from the surface of your skin won’t do much to prevent breakouts. Ways to reduce or eliminate your acne include:

A Proper Skincare Regimen

Acne doesn’t appear because you aren’t cleaning your skin enough. In fact, washing too much or too vigorously can actually make acne worse or lead to more breakouts. If you are prone to acne, look for gentle or acne-specific cleansers. Acne cleansers can dry out the skin so it’s always a good idea to exfoliate once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and to prevent clogged pores.

It’s also important that you read the labels on all the products you use. You wouldn’t believe how many people use makeup or sunscreen without checking to make sure that it’s oil-free. Play it safe and always look for products that say they are noncomedogenic because then they won’t actually clog pores. And if you aren’t sure what products are right for you we can help you decide.

Sometimes Medication is Necessary

In many cases, some form of medication is required in order to combat acne issues. In some cases a prescription ointment, cream or cleanser that contains acne-fighting ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or Retin-A will do the trick. It can take between four to six weeks to see results, so don’t give up on a new product when you don’t see the effects right away. Even a good thing takes time.

Besides topical medications, our Bexley, OH dermatologist may also prescribe antibiotics, oral contraceptive and even Accutane to treat your acne symptoms. Accutane is a very strong prescription medicine but it’s a great option for those suffering from severe, cystic acne.

Bexley Dermatology, your dermatologist in Bexley, OH will be able to provide you with the care you need to get your skin back on track. Whether you only face acne problems from time to time or you have serious and frequent breakouts, a skin care professional will be able to set you up with a treatment plan that works for you.
